The Winter 2010 report from Gate Island on January 2nd of the new year.

The weather as usual for this time of year is cold (15 degrees), windy and snow is in the air and on the ground. WHAT ELSE COULD BE EXPECTED!! The Island road is well plowed and it is easy to come and go. No ice yet on the causeway inclines, but thanks to the Gate Island Association and some member(s) there are new sand/salt blue barrels at each end of the causeway in case anyone can't make it up the inclines. Of course four wheel drive can be appreciated and is appreciated as more vehicles become available with four wheel drive. Also appreciated is the Association plowing the road, a number of years ago access was by a hike in the snow pulling a toboggan with your supplies!
As more and more cottages are winterized or rebuilt there are more people and families on the Island for the holidays, nice. From the wonderful comfort of our heated space we watch the ice fishermen, some have been out there for over two hours, must be fun.  Also ice skating was fine with the wind blowing the snow off the ice, but now there is too much snow cover. A few days ago the ice was 10 inches thick and safe. Today it is thicker and safer with many snowmobiles running, must be fun
Looking ahead to summer---it will come and the many great experiences on Gate Island---they will come. Meanwhile visit Florida!!!!
