Spring Update 2010

posted Apr 18, 2010, 5:06 AM by Gate Island   [ updated Apr 18, 2010, 5:12 AM ]

A Spring Update as of April 12, 2010.
Well, we have a very full full pond!  And the Gates are open, so the large amount of rainfall that hit New England has filled the lake quickly and very early!  Great!  Sometimes this does not happen until late May.  The ice went out early in ApriI. But the water came up about 3/4 of the way with the ice still existing.  Boats can be put in already, a boat went by today at full speed.
Some docks on the West side of the Island were damaged by ice as the water came up.  The Mark Paulson's had a 4x4 leg and 2x4 brace broken, Jones had the dock so badly damaged that it needs to be completely repaired, Benevento's floating dock was separated from the ramp, and Fishman's lift was moved.  Rest of the Island's docks look OK as the ice and wind went only one direction.
The road looks great and someone (Bob Wittaker?) has filled in potholes.  Trees and bushes have buds coming out. So it looks like you can come up and enjoy an early spring.  Hope that the summer is warmer than last year.

The Winter 2010 report from Gate Island on January 2nd of the new year.

posted Feb 10, 2010, 3:27 PM by Gate Island   [ updated Feb 10, 2010, 3:32 PM ]

The weather as usual for this time of year is cold (15 degrees), windy and snow is in the air and on the ground. WHAT ELSE COULD BE EXPECTED!! The Island road is well plowed and it is easy to come and go. No ice yet on the causeway inclines, but thanks to the Gate Island Association and some member(s) there are new sand/salt blue barrels at each end of the causeway in case anyone can't make it up the inclines. Of course four wheel drive can be appreciated and is appreciated as more vehicles become available with four wheel drive. Also appreciated is the Association plowing the road, a number of years ago access was by a hike in the snow pulling a toboggan with your supplies!
As more and more cottages are winterized or rebuilt there are more people and families on the Island for the holidays, nice. From the wonderful comfort of our heated space we watch the ice fishermen, some have been out there for over two hours, must be fun.  Also ice skating was fine with the wind blowing the snow off the ice, but now there is too much snow cover. A few days ago the ice was 10 inches thick and safe. Today it is thicker and safer with many snowmobiles running, must be fun
Looking ahead to summer---it will come and the many great experiences on Gate Island---they will come. Meanwhile visit Florida!!!!

Spring is Here!

posted Apr 10, 2009, 7:57 AM by Gate Island

The ice went out "officially-100%" in the Dam cove at 11:56 PM, Thursday
April 2nd. Not even an ice cube left. The water level is up about one
third, the gates have been closed since the ice started to break up. With
the spring rain currently forecasted, the water level should continue to
rise. Snow is gone and the road is muddy.

Must be spring 2009! (Time to clean up the yard---warning---lots of
branches from the December ice storm.)

Summer at Gate Island is on the horizon!

Ice Storm

posted Dec 14, 2008, 7:29 AM by Gate Island   [ updated Dec 23, 2008, 7:46 PM ]

On December 12, the Island was hit hard by an Ice Storm.  There is some tree damage to the center of the island and a few yards as well as power and telephone lines down.  The Island road is blocked in several places, and it will not be cleared for one or more days.
Kathi Cotugno Shangraw has spoken to the telephone company, and they are going to check every house when they arrive to do repairs as many people cannot make it up just to check the phone wires.  Conrad Tree Service has also been contacted and will begin to remove the limbs and debris that has fallen from the trees.
December 15th
Kathi has an update for us:
As of December 14th estimated time for work crews to begin work to restore power is December 20th!  Just about everyone has limb damage on their property.  Tree guy came Sunday and cleared the road and will be back Monday to clean up brush and limbs that are from the center of island and will give us his judgement on limb trimming that is hanging in road way.  Checked everyone who is closed for winter and could not see any visible damage to homes except Randall (meter torn off house), Shultz (antenna, and power line down), Koch (power lines down), us (Shangraw) garage and house damage but were really lucky. Telephone poles actually shifted in the ground.
Thank you Kathi!
